Hi! We are Kerttu and Michail-Angelos, and we are the team behind KoeKainuu.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kerttu was born and raised in the countryside of Kuhmo. She is a professional nature guide and photographer with 8 years of experience in guiding both in Kuhmo and Lapland.<\/p>\n

Michail-Angelos is originally from Greece, but he has lived in Finland for almost half of his life \u2013 15 years now, and the past 6 years right here in Kuhmo. Like Kerttu, he loves the Finnish nature and is fascinated by local history and he has 10 years experience from travel business.<\/p>\n

We both have plenty of interesting stories and fun facts to share with you. You\u2019ll find us talkative, helpful and humorous \u2013 and most importantly, we are very open-minded. Everyone is welcome on our tours, no matter your religion, gender or sexual orientation. With us you will be safe – we have first aid training, which we renew regurarly, we got also hygiene passports and traveller’s safety pass.<\/p>\n

Experience the legendary Lake Lentua \u2014 a vast wilderness lake surrounded by islands, sandy shores and ancient forests. Together with a local guide, we\u2019ll paddle between the islands, freely choosing our route depending on weather and wildlife activity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lentua is home to many wild forest reindeer<\/strong> during summer, and with a bit of luck, we might spot them along the shores or even swimming between the islands. Along the way we\u2019ll take a break at a campfire site, where you can enjoy a light lunch and coffee prepared over open fire. (In case of wildfire alert we have alternative option)<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s also time for a refreshing swim on one of the lake\u2019s beautiful sandy beaches. Spend an unforgettable summer day exploring Kuhmo\u2019s wild nature \u2014 this is our favourite way to spend a summer day!<\/span><\/p>\n

Visit beatiful Iso-Palonen hiking area with a local guide! We will hike 13 kilometers on an easy trail going around lakes. The landscape consists of old forests, lakes, beaches and eskers. In one spot we will see old structures from WW2.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a chance to spot signs of great predators like bear and wolf. We might also see different birds. Halfway to the tour we will stop on a fireplace to cook a light lunch. There is also a chance to go for a swim at our lunch spot!<\/span><\/p>\n

This tour is perfect for anyone, who wants to spend full day in beautiful nature, and it has plenty of great places for photographers!<\/span><\/p>\n

Important! There has been a storm damage in the area and part of the trail is closed for the summer 2025. It is still possible to hike in the area, but we have to do some changes for the route.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Lets head into the center of Kuhmo to see beautiful lanscapes and to learn plenty about the history and culture of the town!<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

We will start from the Pajakkakoski river. This river is a small paradise right next to the center and you can see plenty of birds, in the summertime also people doing flyfishing. Pajakkakoski is great place to do also some photography!<\/span><\/p>\n

After Pajakkakoski we will walk on the scenic lakeshore route to visit Juminkeko cultural center. Here you will see an art exhibition and learn alot about our culture, especially Kalevala and life next to the border. <\/span><\/p>\n

Next we will contuine walking on the lakeshore route to see more beautiful scenery, until we reach another cultural wonder, Kuhmo art center. You will learn, how it is possible for such a tiny town to have one of the best concert halls in the country! <\/span><\/p>\n

After this you will have 2 hours of free time. You can go for lunch (self paid) and so some shopping. <\/span><\/p>\n

This tour is possible to be done also with bicycles from Hotel Kalevala!<\/span><\/p>\n

Did you know that Finland has very wide mythology? In the old times people used to believe in spirits of the forest, goblins and other creatures.<\/p>\n

Hiidenportti means \u201dgoblin\u2019s gate\u201d and there are some interesting mythical stories related to the park. On this 6 hour hike we will see the Hiidenportti gorge, old forests and a spot that once had a wilderness farm on it.<\/p>\n

\n

The hike will be 5 kilometers and halway we will stop to cook some snacks on the fire. The trail has a lot of rocks and roots so wearing hiking boots is recommended. The tour is suitable for children too.<\/p>\n

\n

Transport from Kuhmo or Vuokatti included. The drive is about 1 hour from both towns, since Hiidenportti is located in the border of Kuhmo and Sotkamo.<\/p>\n

Note! Because of the rocks and roots this trail is classified hard. Not suitable for people with knee problems.<\/p>\n

2 nature trails – Best of Kuhmo<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Visit the beautiful nature of Kuhmo and learn a lot about nature and history on this easy tour! We will visit 2 different nature trails only 15 minutes away from the center.<\/span><\/p>\n

First we go to Lauttavaara nature trail. Here we see an old forest where we can observe sings of the ice age, plants and perhaps even animals. The trail is 2 kilometers long.<\/span><\/p>\n

Next we move to the Lentua rapid. This is the largest free rapid in Kainuu area and we can observe it really close from a wooden duckboard. You will learn at the same time some exiting history of using the rapids as transport route for tar. The walk is about 1,5 kilometers.<\/span><\/p>\n

We will also go to a laavu shelter next to the rapid to make a fire. We will prepare coffee and a snack to enjoy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Skishoes are short, wide skis, that are a hybrid in between a snowsnoe and a ski. They are easy to learn and with them you can explore wintery nature off path!<\/p>\n

This tour starts from the shore of the Hotel Kalevala. We will ski on top of a frozen lake to go around 1 kilometer to the Harakkasaari island. We can explore around this island that has been formed during the ice age. You will hear alot of interesting stuff about Finnish nature and the ice age.<\/p>\n

Then we will make a fire and prepare a light lunch with soup and bread. After soup we will have also coffee\/tea.<\/p>\n

You will get some useful tips to reduce stress in your everyday life.<\/p>\n
